Pelvic Floor Therapy FAQ | Where You Are PT Oxford MS
Frequently Asked

Pelvic floor PT, answered.

The questions patients in Oxford, MS ask most often, with straight answers from Dr. Meg Cochran, DPT.

What is pelvic floor therapy?

Pelvic floor therapy is a specialized form of physical therapy that focuses on the muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues in the pelvic region. These muscles support your bladder, bowel, and reproductive organs.

At Where You Are PT in Oxford, MS, Dr. Meg Cochran, DPT uses evidence based techniques to address pelvic floor dysfunction through strengthening, relaxation, and coordination exercises. It can help with incontinence, pelvic pain, sexual dysfunction, and post childbirth recovery.

How do I know if I need pelvic floor PT?

You may benefit from pelvic floor therapy if you experience:

  • Urinary or fecal incontinence
  • Frequent urination or incomplete bladder emptying
  • Pelvic pain during or after intercourse
  • Pain during menstruation
  • Lower back pain or hip pain
  • Constipation or difficulty with bowel movements
  • Weakness in the pelvic muscles

Many people don't realize their symptoms are related to pelvic floor dysfunction. If you're unsure, schedule a free 15 minute discovery call to discuss your concerns.

What happens during a pelvic floor therapy session?

Your first session is a 2-hour in home initial evaluation. It includes a comprehensive review of medical history, symptoms, and goals. Dr. Meg performs an internal and external pelvic floor assessment to evaluate muscle tone, strength, and coordination.

Subsequent sessions include targeted exercises, manual therapy techniques, biofeedback training, and home exercise programming. She brings everything needed directly to your home throughout Oxford, Water Valley, Batesville, and Lafayette County.

Does pelvic floor therapy hurt?

Pelvic floor therapy should not be painful. Some people experience mild discomfort during the initial assessment as we evaluate your muscles, but this is temporary and typically minimal.

Treatment focuses on gentle, therapeutic techniques that gradually improve strength and function. If you have a history of trauma or significant pain sensitivity, we discuss modifications to ensure your experience is comfortable and safe. If anything feels uncomfortable, communication is key, just let Meg know so she can adjust.

How many sessions will I need?

Most patients move into Complete Care after the initial evaluation, which is a 4 session block over 4 weeks. Many patients complete 1 to 2 blocks total (4 to 8 sessions). Some see improvement in fewer sessions; others may need ongoing maintenance.

Dr. Meg reassesses with you at session 4 to decide on next steps: another block, alum singles, or graduate to Thrive Membership for ongoing concierge access.

Do you accept insurance?

Where You Are PT is cash pay only. HSA and FSA cards are accepted directly. After each block, you receive a superbill you can submit to your insurance for potential out of network reimbursement.

Cash pay means longer sessions, no visit caps, and care decisions made between you and Meg, not your insurance plan. Initial evaluation is $225, Complete Care is $900 for 4 sessions, Thrive Membership is $499/yr. Full pricing here.

What should I wear to a session?

Wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing that you can easily remove from the waist down for assessment and treatment. Many patients wear athletic wear or sweatpants, anything that allows easy access.

You'll have privacy during your session, and Dr. Meg maintains professional draping practices. For in home sessions, you have the additional comfort of being in your familiar environment.

Can men benefit from pelvic floor therapy?

Yes. Men experience pelvic floor dysfunction just as women do. Common men's conditions treated include post prostatectomy incontinence, erectile dysfunction with a pelvic floor component, chronic pelvic pain (CPPS), premature ejaculation, and lower back pain.

Dr. Meg provides specialized care for male patients in a non judgmental, professional environment, in home across Lafayette County. See men's pelvic health.

What is mobile, in home pelvic floor therapy?

This is especially beneficial if you have mobility limitations, childcare challenges, chronic pain, or simply prefer the comfort and privacy of your home. In home therapy is just as effective as clinic based treatment while eliminating travel time and providing a more relaxed environment.
